What is Folk Art?

Folk artist are fervent artists of expression, creating amidst countless socio-economic restraints, never pausing to question, is it art? Their work is a direct reflection of a moments inspiration.

Outsider artists create because the spirit moves them. They are  undeciphered enigmas of the American landscape--the symbols of freedom, those living outside the system. Their craft is raw, the result of the pure impulse to create, and therein lies its power and originality.
The Anton Haardt Gallery features many outsider art pieces from her extensive collection: Sepia photographs by Anton of James Son Ford Thomas, the legendary blues musician, folk artist, and boyhood friend of Robert Johnson, are on display. Louisiana artist Chuckie Williams painting of John Lee Hooker and mud-filled paintings of Guitar players by Fayette, Alabama Artist Jimmie Lee Sudduth. Mose Tolliver guitars painted with pure house paint are also on display.
