BOOKS BY ANTON HAARDT & OTHER EPHEMERA
mose t A- Z
Mose T from A to Z : The Folk Art of Mose Tolliver is an intimate portrait of Mose T, Alabama folk artist who saw fame in his own lifetime after a disaster caused him to pick up a paintbrush. The photographs, the art work, and quotes by Mose offer powerful images, touching the South's natural soul. Mose T from A to Z : The Folk Art of Mose Tolliver, is a 11”x 12” coffee table book and is sold thru Amazon, my website , and my Ebay shop.
RUN TOWARD THE SUN
Run Toward the Sun: Remembering Juanita Rogers is an illustrated memoir of my friendship with Juanita Rogers, an African-American self-taught artist. Juanita lived alone in a dilapidated shack in the middle of a cow pasture in rural Alabama and created some of the strangest bodies of vernacular art in the American South. Using hand-dug clay, Spanish moss, and mule bones she sculpted fetish-like artworks. Juanita was devoted to making art and believed that she worked for an enigmatic character by the name of Mr. Stonefish, who may have only been a figment of her imagination. .
THE MOST EXPENSIVE HOTEL
The Most Expensive Hotel is a novel, inspired by the true events of an unconventional love affair and a death defying escape from a 100-year-old French built Mexican prison. The novel opens in 1996, when Eve, a middle-aged housewife, begins a Greyhound bus journey to San Francisco to attend a Ferlinghetti Writer's Conference. On the bus, she meets Hurri, a foul-smelling bag lady. Over the course of three days, Eve tells the bag lady a wild story of her youth, when she left her husband for the next-door neighbor, traded her puppet life routine and trekked south of the border on a quest for tropical paradise that soon detonated. Jay, the perfect lone wolf badass, finds himself looking at an indefinite sentence in a notorious Mexican carcel, that housed in the past legendary criminals suchas Pancho Villa and Zapata. Eve foolhardily comesto his rescue, visiting him daily for one year, amidst the pitted underbelly of motley criminals. When freedom seemed to be a hopeless pipe dream, in desperation he darts down a manhole with no plan and for eight hours, through rat-infested sewer pipes he achieves a luck-filled genius escape. The bliss of freedom is short-lived, and with no common goal after the escape, their relationship detonates. Years pass until Jay, in a moment of despair, kills himself.... or does he?
LET'S GET LOST
Let’s Get Lost is an "on the road” chronicle of travel journal entries. The montage of sketches, photographs and writings are a flight through the cached annals of my cabal and the only way to travel when you're suffering from the been there, done that, blues. It spans four decades of journals from Mexico, Italy, France, Nicaragua, Peru, Bolivia, to every nook and cranny of the United States. Over backroads, jungle shacks, Amazon River estuaries, and Machu Picchu, I was struck by the irony and the ecstasy of what I experienced: from a Oaxaca peasant woman carrying a perfectly iced white wedding cake on her head,, a brilliant field of Van Gough sunflowers in southern France, to a decapitated pig's head held by a small Honduran boy.
About
Eclectic Southern Writings
Pentimentos From The Haardt : Sara Haardt is a hybridized memoir and biography that straddles my journey to revive and dive into the paper trail of my aunt the writer. Peeking into Sara's life: detailing flashes of her youth, marriage, fragile health , obsessions, relationships with women, and how she influenced my life. Sara Powell Haardt, with a well published record of essays and short stories, died in 1935 at the age of 37. Her stories and life experiences fired my imagination long after she was gone. She died thirteen years before my birth in 1948. Although I never knew her, later in my adult life, I realized a spiritual hunger to know who she was. This is a book about two women, driven by creative forces and a shared rebellion, connecting over time.
